Academy Update

The latest step towards the new Academy has been taken with the sigining of the Expression of Interest by the DFES. Planning is underway to create the new Academy starting in September 2010. Initially the Academy will be housed on the existing sites, Central and Grantham Church School in the current premises. A proposed brand new build is planned for September 2013.

Best Exam Results Ever!

Well done to the 2009 Year 11 students, who smashed the school's target for the percentage obtaining at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C. Almost three-quarters of them gained this important benchmark qualification, many achieving much higher results than the predictions when they joined the school, thus showing the quality of the teaching and the hard work and dedication of the students. There was also an increase of 9% in the percentage of students gaining at least 5 GCSE higher grades including English and Maths.

Here are the key statistics for 2009.

5+ A*-C 74%

5+ A*-C (E/M) 40%

5+ A*-G 95%

1+A*-G 99%

A Healthy School- it's official!

Central has now achieved 'Healthy School' status. This is an important national recognition, so important nowadays when we all need to ensure our young people learn about a healthy life-style. To obtain it our Director of Sport, Mr Plumb, has worked hard for many months to collect all the evidence, for example the quality of our healthy meals- and the large number of students who eat them!- the outstanding standards in PE and the large numbers of students who take part in extra-curricular sport and take regular exercise by cycling or walking to school and the work the college does with the local community, both young and old, to help them lead healthy lives.

"You have embraced Healthy School principles and embedded them at the heart of the school," wrote the Healthy Schools Manager in the citation. " Central Technology & Sports College is clearly a school where Every Child Matters and staff are committed and enthusiastic about the part they play in shaping young peoples' lives."

Clarity, consistency and consequences!

2009/10 has started with a new approach to behaviour based on the three Cs: clarity, consistency and consequences. Based on one simple rule- doing what you are asked- it provides a clear discipline structure, a warning system and consistent consequences for students who don't! Information about the new policy has been sent to all parents and is available on the Behaviour Policy page in the Parents' Section of this web-site.

As part of then policy we have also provided on-site provision for students with special needs who have behavioural difficulties, thus ensuring that they can make better progress and other students learning is not disrupted.

So far our new approach to behaviour is proving to be successful, with both students and staff telling us about the calm and purposeful learning environment in our classrooms this term.

October 2009 Update

Crowds attend Open Evening

Once again we welcomed hundreds of parents and Year 6 pupils from local primary schools to our Open Day on 24th September. Many chose to visit during the day and toured the school, peering into classrooms where our students were continually caught out 'being good' - a very embarrassing experience for most adolescents, but quite normal here at Central. In the evening I made my presentation in two shifts because of the large numbers and once again our visitors toured the school and saw displays and activities with the many students who had put on an evening shift for their school. A special mention to our Head Boy and Head Girl, who made welcoming speeches and to our Year 8 junior prefects who acted as tour guides during the day. They were complimented by our visitors. A big thank you to all the students and staff who worked so hard to showcase our college.

Student Success

Well done to Brennan Knight who has once again this year achieved gold in the Midlands Area Judo Trials and will be representing the Midlands at the national championships. Good luck Brennan! We also keep track of former students who achieve success- and our congratulations go to one of our former head boys, Chris Graves, who has won a competition and received regional recognition for his work as East Midlands Young Volunteer of the Year.

Central is Caring in the Community

Well done to the students who have been helping in the gardens at Gregory House. They have been complimented on their attitude and on the pleasant way they have been responding to the residents.

A World Record at Central

What excitement there was on a hot day at the end of June when we all took part in the Big Skip- a world record attempt. The aim was for the largest number of people to skip simultaneously for three minutes. Altogether 44,772 people took part from many schools in our region and this term we heard that we had got the record. We were also pleased to learn that the event had raised £8,533 for the British Heart Foundation.

Academy News

We have now been given news that the academy sponsors will be the Priory Federation of Academies Trust. We are very pleased about this as the Priory Trust already run Priory LSST - a very well-known extremely successful school in Lincoln and it already has experience of developing schools into successful academies. A representative from the Priory Trust attended our recent Open Evening and we will be soon holding information meetings for parents. However, please do not hesitate to contact the headteacher if you would like to ask anything.
