Special educational needs

In its programme of teaching and learning, the College manages the education of students with Special Educational Needs according to the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (January 2002) and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001). The day-to-day management of the education of students with Special Needs is the responsibility of the Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who works closely with the Head Teacher to ensure that the objectives in the Statements of Special Educational Needs are met. Students with a Statement of Special Educational Need are provided with an agreed Individual Education Plan (IEP) at the appropriate level and their progress reviewed each half term. These students may be given extra support in the classroom or withdrawn from some lessons for individual or small group teaching. Some students may have been allocated extra funding to secure the provision of Learning Support in a variety of forms. This support also takes into consideration the expert advice given by outside agencies and, of course, the views of parents with whom maximum liaison is actively encouraged.

Those students who are identified as having a Special Educational Need at School Action Plus or School Action according to the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice are very closely monitored from entry in Y7 through to Y11. Each student has an IEP and progress is reviewed twice a year. Parents are actively encouraged to attend these reviews to ensure that optimum support is accessed throughout the students' career at Central.
