Assemblies; thought for the day

Assembly Themes. 2009/10

Overall theme: Who is my neighbour? Building a cohesive community

This set of assembly themes, with its associated reflections to be used as simple 'thoughts for the day' , is designed to contribute to our community cohesion strategy by encouraging students to think about their place in their communities- as members of the school community, as young citizens in the local Grantham community and as human beings in the world community.

As the themes are also 'of essentially Christian nature', and as each assembly includes a 'thought for the day' which can be used for quiet reflection in the assembly or as a 'thought' for reflection or discussion in the tutor time, these themes also fulfil the requirement of the collective worship policy. If students do not attend assembly tutors are asked to spend five minutes using the 'thoughts' to focus students' ideas on the weekly themes and to stimulate discussion about a cohesive community.

However, the assembly themes and 'messages' are not prescriptive and assembly-takers can change the message or insert a different assembly of their own, particularly when there is an important topical issue worthy of being the subject of an assembly. Otherwise each weekly assembly theme will be repeated for every assembly in the week. Any member of staff is welcome to take an assembly. Otherwise the assemblies will be taken by the headteacher or other members of the Senior Leadership Team.
